Purpose

UNMC uses Canvas as a Learning Management System (LMS) to manage and deliver course content.

Policy

  1. All College of Nursing (CON) courses will use Canvas to deliver course content.
  2. Protected Health Information (PHI) about patients/clients is not permitted in Canvas (including dates of service, except year) since the LMS is not Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliant. Approved cloud storage solutions for UNMC for patient sensitive data are Microsoft Office 365 and Box (research).
  3. Minimum expectations for the site include the following items:

    Course Navigation Menu Buttons:
    • Home
    • Announcements
    • Syllabus
      • Includes dated listing of published assignments
    • Modules
      • Course Information
        • Syllabus, Addendum, Schedules, Tools/Form
      • Weekly Modules
        • Content organized by week, units, or lesson.
        • Include learning objectives, learning resources, and assignments.
    • Grades
    • Library
      • Default resource maintained by McGoogan Library

Procedure

  1. The CON Instructional Technologist team will create Canvas sites for each course offered each semester following the guidance in the Example Template on Canvas.
  2. Faculty will update the site with the current semester’s information, resources, assignments, etc.
  3. Syllabi and addenda (policy and/or division specific) are loaded into the site by the office associate.
  4. Faculty open the site for student viewing no later than one week (7 days) prior to the beginning of the semester.
