Policy

As a practice discipline, clinical experience is an important and integral part of learning. It is during these experiences that socialization to the profession, exposure to the interprofessional teams, self-organization, and clinical competencies are advanced to demonstrate safe, quality patient, family, and community-centered care. Clinical competency must be validated, therefore, absence from clinical learning is discouraged except under urgent or emergent circumstances.

Students who are absent from their clinical experience, which should only occur in the event of urgent or emergent life event, will be expected to:

  1. Inform the clinical faculty member at the earliest possible date of the absence, with rationale.
  2. Make up the clinical hours to the extent possible by taking responsibility to work with the clinical faculty member and/or, with the help of the faculty, the clinical agency where the clinical experiences take place.
  3. Make up the clinical hours by the end of the semester in which they occur.
  4. Accept the consequences of missing clinical if accommodations cannot be made.
  5. If a clinical day is missed, progression in the program is jeopardized.

Procedure

The procedure for such clinical make-up is determined by the Course Coordinator and/or Clinical Instructor.
