===Purpose===

Establishes criteria for appointment as graduate faculty associate for the College of Nursing (CON) as described in the University of Nebraska Graduate College Bylaws and Policies.

===Scope===

Applies to all faculty, volunteer faculty, and adjunct faculty.

===Policy===

Graduate faculty associate status is primarily designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to contribute towards the education of graduate students in their discipline, while they simultaneously develop the credentials to become eligible for graduate faculty status. In addition, graduate faculty associate status is appropriate for faculty whose professional background or assigned instructional responsibilities are such that their contribution towards graduate education is highly valued, but they are otherwise not likely to seek or be eligible for graduate faculty status.

A faculty member nominated as a graduate faculty associate must meet these criteria:

hold the rank of assistant professor, clinical assistant professor, or corresponding adjunct faculty rank or above

hold the terminal degree normally accepted for academic employment in the discipline

===Graduate Faculty Associate Application===

The process for applying to become a graduate faculty associate through the CON is listed below. Application packets must be submitted to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs (ADAP) and include:

The UNMC Nomination for Graduate Faculty Associate Status form.

Curriculum Vita

A Nomination Letter to include:

For internal candidates:

Evidence of Scholarly activity as defined using Boyer’s Model (1996) and includes: dissemination of scholarly work through DigitalCommons and/or invited and peer-reviewed presentations, evidence of leading QI/EBP projects, participation in national guidelines, leading changes at the state or national level, and primary or co-investigator on a grant award, etc.

A detailed development plan to become eligible for graduate faculty status. The plan will be developed with the assistance of the ADAP and/or division assistant dean and must include the following:

a timeframe

how the plan enhances criteria for graduate faculty status

an approved mentor with current graduate faculty status

For external candidates with highly valued contributions to education (i.e. voting member on a dissertation committee), the letter must include the following:

a timeframe

planned contributions to education

All graduate faculty members in the College must vote on the application and at least 2/3 of the CON graduate faculty must vote to support the application. The ADAP will write a letter to the Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC explaining the reasons for supporting the nomination. The nomination materials will be sent to the Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC with the nomination letter.

The Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC will review the nomination and will appoint the faculty member to graduate faculty associate status, if appropriate.

Graduate faculty associate appointments may be renewed for additional terms of four years each after completing the same process described above. For renewal, the new nomination letter will include an update on the previous development plan and how the faculty did/did not meet the goals of the previous plan.

Procedures for appeal are in the University of Nebraska Graduate College Bylaws and Policies.

Grading:

Students must maintain a cumulative average of 83.0% in courses that use examinations with 50 or more multiple choice questions as a method of evaluation. The weighted average of all examinations will be calculated first without rounding. If the average of the examination grades is less than 83.0%, that resulting value will be the final course grade.

If the examination average is greater than or equal to 83.0% (without rounding), then other course assignments will be included in the final student course score.

The additional graded items for assignments and group work scores will be added to create the final student course score.

The final student course score must be an average of 83.0% or greater to successfully complete and pass the course.

Only the final course score will be subject to mathematical rounding to the nearest whole number. This whole number will be based on consideration of the numeric value of the first decimal number only (i.e.: final student course grade 87.4 = 87%; 87.5 = 88%).

A student’s progress will be reviewed each semester by his/her faculty advisor, and academic concerns will be submitted each semester to the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee.

The MSN, Post MSN DNP, and Post Graduate Certificate programs must be completed within 5 consecutive calendar years. BSN to DNP program must be completed within 7 consecutive calendar years.

All students must apply for candidacy one semester before filing for graduation.

The following criteria for candidacy have been established by the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee:

Completion of one year of graduate study or its equivalent

Grade Point Average of 3.0 or above

Full graduate standing

Completion of one course in their nursing specialty area

All deficiencies removed

No less than 50% of the course work must be completed at the University of Nebraska campuses after being formally admitted to UNMC College of Nursing. Appropriate courses may be taken within other departments of the University of Nebraska under guidance of the specialty coordinator or advisor. Graduate certificate course work requires a minimum of 12 credits with the option of one third of the coursework in collateral departments of relevant disciplines.

===Procedure===

Student Services will run a query each semester to identify students with semester course grades below 3.0 and overall GPAs below 3.0. Faculty advisors will be notified.

If the above situation occurs or a grade of C is received in a course, the faculty advisor in conjunction with the specialty coordinator and specialty faculty will make recommendations to the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee on the progression of the student, with rationale, to 1) continue in the program; 2) repeat the course when next offered; or, 3) dismiss the student.

If the student has an overall GPA below 3.0 a plan for self or directed remediation must be included and a letter from the Associate Dean of Academic Programs will be sent to the student.

'''Utilizing Generative AI'''
==Policy==
UNMC recognizes its role as an innovator in higher education, research, and clinical care, and embraces the future opportunities available to utilize generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in educational, research, clinical and administrative settings, while being careful to mitigate the potential risks involved in its development and use.

It is the responsibility of the faculty, students and staff of UNMC to use GenAI products or GenAI-enhanced products in an appropriate manner. Users should assume that all GenAI products or GenAI-enhanced products make data publicly available unless otherwise indicated per explicit agreement. All existing education, information security, and research compliance policies and guidelines across our educational, research and clinical missions that may implicate GenAI usage should continue to be followed with full responsibility of the individual user(s).

This policy, and other domain-specific GenAI policies, will continue to be developed and updated in light of the rapidly evolving nature of this technology, as well as due to ongoing institutional work in this field. Changing knowledge, best practices and national guidelines and regulations will form the basis of future policy for UNMC.
===Procedures:===

Students who wish to be considered for UNMC academic scholarships should complete the UNMC Scholarship Application found on their People Soft TO DO LIST by April 1 or within 45 days after acceptance to the CON. The application is completed only once upon admission to the CON. Some graduate scholarships may also require application through the Graduate Studies Office.

Graduate students interested in graduate assistantships should apply by June 1 and October 1 to the College of Nursing Student Services. Interviews will be conducted by faculty with money designated for graduate assistantships after June 1 for the academic year and October 1 for spring semester.

Graduate student scholarship funds are reviewed and awarded by the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee, and the PhD Affairs Council, annually prior to the fall semester. Occasionally, awards become available for allocation at other times during the academic year, and the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee and/or the PhD Affairs Council hold special meeting(s) to determine recipients of those awards.

If applicants appear equally qualified for a scholarship, funds are awarded on the basis of academic excellence and to students who have demonstrated success in the Graduate Programs. Other considerations in the event of a tie, include, but are not limited to, full time status in the Graduate Program and service to the University. Students’ cumulative grade point averages are used to determine academic excellence.

Some funds from the University of Nebraska Foundation are derived from monies designated for both undergraduate and graduate students. The graduate student portion of the funds is based upon the percentage of graduate students in the total CON student population.

The funding source may stipulate scholarship criteria. When so stipulated, the College honors the donor’s preferences.

If need is a criterion to receive a particular scholarship, scholarship funds are awarded on the basis of federally determined financial need as determined by student report on the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Students who wish to be considered for need scholarships should complete the FAFSA before April 1 every year.

Students who are awarded scholarships are informed in writing of:

the criteria used

the length of term and amount of the award

the name and address of the donor or designee, to facilitate acknowledgment

The following is a timeline of procedures for administration of the graduate scholarships and awards:

June

Traineeship money (Fall) – Student Services will develop a list of applicants. Funds will be equally split amongst candidates who are furthest in their programs and/or are full-time students.

June - July

Graduate Scholarships – Student Services will determine those eligible to receive scholarships based on donor criteria and need. The formula includes: financial need, GPA, full or part time status, and specialty. Student must meet the following criteria: GPA >3.5. Funds will be split across graduate specialties and by those closer to graduating and having taken at least 6 graduate credits.

October

Who’s Who for December and May professional graduate students – The number is set by Who’s Who (portion of total) and known by the Student Services Office. The award criteria are: highest GPA, community service and leadership ability. Whether student meets the award criteria will be determined from input from an academic advisor. This award is given at convocation and is presented by the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee Chair or a committee member as designated by the Chair.

Procedures for selecting Who’s Who:

A list of graduates will be sent by the Student Services Office to the specialty coordinators for their recommendations. The results are sent back to the Student Services Office for tabulation. If the number exceeds the allotment of the Who’s Who, then the Student Services Office will send another email to the student’s academic advisor and ask for input. The input will be reviewed by the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee who will make the final selection of the candidates. The final candidate list will be submitted to Who’s Who. They will print the certificates and return them to the College.

The names of the Who’s Who candidates will be read by the Professional Graduate Nursing Affairs Committee Chair or their designee at convocation.

December

There may be new traineeship applicants to fund (See June).

February

Charlotte Burgess for May MSN graduates – A list of the highest GPA graduates is sent by Student Services Office to the CON Alumni President who will determine the number of award recipients. This award is given to all the 4.0 GPA or highest GPA graduates. This award is given out at convocation by the CON Alumni President.

Jbarrier
