General Position Description

While maintaining the integrity of the concept-based curriculum and ensuring inclusion of active learning strategies, the undergraduate semester coordinator is primarily responsible for facilitating implementation of the curricula relative to the appointed semester, and communicating with all undergraduate semester coordinators on their campus. In addition, the semester coordinator may be asked to provide input into team members’ ongoing development and semester success. This responsibility is an opportunity for professional growth and development of leadership skills, and should be rotated among faculty with previous experience teaching in the courses within that semester. The semester coordinator reports to the assistant deans on the respective campuses, the undergraduate program director, and other administrators as needed.

General areas of responsibility include coordination of semester curricula implementation and instructional methods, communication, evaluation, and resource identification for budget needs. The semester coordinator should not be a course coordinator of the same course/term if at all possible.

Curriculum and Instruction

The undergraduate semester coordinator is responsible to work closely with undergraduate course coordinators as needed to provide smooth implementation of the courses within the semester. Toward that end, activities may include providing for the students a list of all faculty assigned to the semester with contact information, preparation of a schedule of examinations and major assignments across the semester. The Semester I coordinator may be involved in development of curricular orientation materials for incoming undergraduate students. The undergraduate semester coordinator serves as a resource to course faculty in preparation of teaching materials, examination items, teaching strategies, and identification of and continued utilization of clinical and alternative learning experiences. The semester coordinator works with the course coordinators to assure a coordinated student schedule and efficient use of resources (classrooms, lab, clinical sites, etc.). The undergraduate semester coordinator collaborates with the other division semester coordinators to ensure continuity, sequencing, and integration across the curriculum.

Communication

The undergraduate semester coordinator meets regularly and/or as needed to coordinate curriculum implementation with course coordinators within the semester, and with the semester coordinators within the division. Each semester coordinator provides information regarding the curricular, teaching and student issues to the assistant deans, undergraduate program director, and other administrators as needed. The semester coordinator facilitates information exchanges and the development of a positive working environment among faculty teaching in that semester. They coordinate planning meetings for the semester teaching team as needed and mentors new team members and/or graduate assistants.

Evaluation

The undergraduate semester coordinator works with course coordinators to ensure that examinations are reliable and valid, and serves as a resource in planning remediation for individual students as needed. The semester coordinator reviews the student’s academic or clinical performance as requested by the course coordinator, team member and/or student. The undergraduate semester coordinator may provide academic counseling to students as requested by the course coordinator, team member and/or student. After collaborating with the course coordinator, the semester coordinator may refer students to other available and appropriate resources for counseling. The undergraduate semester coordinator works in collaboration with the assistant dean, student services coordinator and the undergraduate program director. They are available to meet with students who have overall semester curricular concerns, and refers them to appropriate administrators as necessary. In collaboration with the course coordinator, the undergraduate semester coordinator ensures that agency clinical evaluations are completed and submitted to the staff assistant of the undergraduate program director or designated staff member within two weeks after the end of the term.

Resources

The undergraduate semester coordinator works with course coordinators to identify necessary faculty and material resources needed to effectively implement the curriculum, and notifies appropriate administrators.
