General Position Description
The Director of Continuing Nursing Education is accountable for the administration of the College of Nursing’s Continuing Nursing Education Program and has authority to assure adherence to the ANCC Accreditation Program Criteria in the provision of continuing nursing education. The Director is responsible for all phases of continuing nursing education program development, including assessing educational needs and designing, planning, implementing, and evaluating continuing nursing education activities. The Director maintains overall responsibility for the management of the human, material and fiscal resources associated with the College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education Program. The Director is responsible for the academic and fiscal records for all program offerings. As a member of the faculty s/he participates in the tripartite faculty role of teaching, research, and service.
Organizational Relationships
The Director of Continuing Nursing Education reports to the Associate Dean for Transformational Practice and Partnerships. The Director is a member of the College of Nursing Executive Council and collaborates with College of Nursing leadership and faculty to see that the activities of the Continuing Nursing Education Program are consistent with and supportive of the College’s strategic priorities.
Responsibilities of the Position
- Serves as administrator/lead nurse planner of the College of Nursing Continuing Nursing Education Program/ Provider Unit with authority to administer the provider unit in accordance with all American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Commission on Accreditation criteria.
- Collaborates with faculty and administrative personnel within the University of Nebraska Medical Center as well as health professionals at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels to develop continuing education programs which best suit the needs of professional nurses and other health professionals.
- Collaborates with other departments, colleges, schools, institutes, medical education companies, and professional groups to develop grant proposals and seek outside funding support to plan and provide continuing education programs.
- Maintains a close working relationship with multiple groups and resources including officers and representatives from professional nursing organizations, national education societies and organizations, and clinical experts to assist in the determination of educational needs and to facilitate professional support for the Continuing Nursing Education Program.
- Provides leadership in the ongoing, comprehensive, data-based evaluation of the provider unit’s processes to facilitate optimal effectiveness in its overall functioning and assure the highest quality of the continuing nursing education it provides.
- Develops, implements, evaluates, and revises processes, policies and strategic goals/outcomes for the College’s Continuing Nursing Education Program as needed by the program and the ANCC, and with input from the College’s Executive Council as appropriate.
- Maintains overall responsibility for record keeping of program offerings, and for management of data and reports necessary to maintain accreditation status.
- Orients all nurse planners and other key personnel to the ANCC accreditation criteria.
- Monitors and manages the human, material and fiscal resources of the Continuing Nursing Education Program.
- Engages in an active program of scholarship, ideally in nursing education or outcomes evaluation.
Appointment Requirements
- Baccalaureate or master’s degree in nursing, with earned doctorate in nursing or related field (e.g., one graduate degree must be in nursing);
- Possess a general understanding of higher education, knowledge of the role of continuing education within institutions of higher learning; and current competency in nursing professional development practice;
- Familiarity with the health care delivery system, education of health professionals and current issues in those fields;
- Expertise in adult learning theory, curriculum development, instructional technology, and evaluation methods;
- Demonstrated leadership abilities, managerial skills, creativity, ability to make timely decisions, to collaborative effectively, and to be open to the ideas of others and to constructive feedback;
- Licensure, or eligibility for licensure, as a registered nurse in Nebraska
