Purpose

Establishes guidelines for systematically organizing content for the syllabus in agreement with the Board of Regents Bylaw 4.1.

Scope

Applies to the courses of all undergraduate and professional graduate programs.

Policy

All syllabi, addenda, and grading rubrics past and present are stored electronically. The syllabus serves as a formal record of the course for the specific term and year and is used to disseminate information in a structured way for presentation for students and to accrediting agencies, nursing boards, other academic institutions and working committees for use in course and program evaluation.

The policy addendum, division specific addendum, and grading rubrics are attachments that are part of the syllabus, and students are responsible for all information in all these documents. See Appendix X for the outline and guidelines.

PhD program syllabi must follow the guidelines and template provided by UNMC Graduate Studies.

Changes to the following items in the syllabus: a) course title, b) course description, c) pre- and co-requisites, d) credit allocation, e) course competencies and f) undergraduate concepts and exemplars must be approved by the appropriate curriculum committee.

Standards used for curriculum development (i.e., AACN Essentials) and the program outcomes must be matched with the appropriate course competencies in the syllabus.

  • Standards used for curriculum development for the undergraduate program include the AACN Essentials domains, competencies, sub-competencies, and concepts. Standards used for curriculum development for the undergraduate program include the AACN Essentials 10 domains, 8 concepts, 45 competencies and entry-level professional nursing education sub-competencies.
  • Standards used for curriculum development for the professional graduate program include the AACN Essentials 10 domains, 8 concepts and 45 competencies, the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification, and Education, and specialty competencies for each track taught in the professional graduate program.

A link to the policy addendum containing all pertinent policies for a program level is included in all course syllabi and is considered part of the syllabus. The policy addendum provides an overview of information for each policy, along with any university required language for a particular policy item and is updated each semester.

Each course may elect to have a division-specific addendum in addition to the syllabus. The purpose of the addendum is to provide additional supplemental materials that are specific for the division. The template for the division-specific addendum is included in 1403-PR. This addendum is considered part of the syllabus.

Evaluation methods and percentages must be included in course syllabi. Grading criteria (rubrics) for assignments are located in the learning management system and are considered part of the syllabus.

The cross-campus coordinator or course coordinator is responsible for updating the syllabus and sending the updated syllabus back to their assigned staff member for final format review.

Posting of the syllabus can be completed by the assigned staff member or course coordinator. The syllabus and the division-specific addendum must be posted in the learning management system for student viewing no later than one week (7 days) prior to the beginning of the semester.
