Introduction
This document provides guiding principles to assist a current instructor-rank faculty member in preparing for rank promotion after completion of a terminal degree. Please see the existing guidelines for Doctoral Prepared Faculty Role Differentiation.
It is recognized that not all faculty will meet a unified or predefined profile, and that each candidate will come forward with a unique blend of accomplishments supporting the mission of the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the College of Nursing. It is a primary responsibility of the candidate, through their Curriculum Vitae (CV) and presentation, and the division assistant dean or supervisor to clearly describe the significance of the candidate’s contributions and define how the candidate contributes to the mission of the University and the College.
Process
- Faculty members meet with their division assistant dean or supervisor during their annual evaluations and prior to completion of their terminal degree to discuss expectations and accomplishments (teaching, scholarly activities, clinical practice if applicable, professional service) for their two areas of primary focus.
- A letter of intent is presented to the division assistant dean by the faculty member at least a year before completing their terminal degree.
- Faculty are responsible for meeting the rank requirements they wish to pursue. These are listed on the CON Promotion & Tenure webpage and in Policies 1601, 1602, and Procedure 1602-PR.
- The faculty member is required to apply for the position in the UNMC hiring system. Faculty candidates submit their current CV, and a background check is completed.
- The faculty candidate will participate in a formal interview. As part of the interview, the faculty candidate will provide a formal presentation to all CON faculty on their area of focus (teaching, scholarly activities, clinical practice if applicable, professional service). Presentation topic examples could be their dissertation topic or DNP project outcomes, teaching exemplar(s), research agenda, or practice scholarship. Areas of accomplishment for this academic appointment must be evidenced in their CV and during their presentation.
- The division assistant dean submits hiring recommendation to the dean.
