General Position Description

The Director of Instructional Design and Technology provides instructional design, technology, and pedagogical leadership to ensure that best practices and quality standards guide curriculum development, design, and delivery of all courses in various course modalities (Classroom, Online, Hybrid learning). Plays an integral role in leading the College's efforts to integrate teaching and learning technologies across curricula, aligning these initiatives with the institution's strategic goals. Collaborates with academic programs leaders (deans and directors), instructional technologists support personnel, faculty, across and all divisions, CON LRC director, UNMC Stakeholders to promote pedagogical approaches and the use of technologies (e.g., AI, AR/VR, learning analytics) that support excellence in education. Advances faculty development and professional development (e.g., e-learning, non-credit, micro-credentials), driving institutional change, and contributing to the colleges scholarly output in curricular innovation.

Organizational Relationships

The Director of Instructional Design and Technology reports to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs of the CON. This position provides supervision to instructional technology staff.

Responsibilities of the Position

Professional Administration (50%)

Strategic Leadership

• Provide vision and direction for the College’s instructional design and educational technology strategies, ensuring alignment with the College’s strategic goals while working collaboratively with all CON divisions.
• Serve as a key driver of change within the College by influencing policy, participating in high-level decision-making, and collaborating with senior leadership on strategic initiatives.
• Act as a college’s liaison CON and UNMC IT for educational (LMS) coordinating and enhancing technical workflow and support services.
• Directly supervise the work of instructional technologists and other design staff.

Program Development

• Provide program oversight by leading the design and development of nursing courses in various course modalities (Classroom, Online, Hybrid learning). Ensure that courses meet institutional quality standards and integrate innovative pedagogical practices.
• Coordinates resources, personnel, and processes needed to ensure that instructional design projects and course developments are delivered in a timely manner meeting the agreed upon goals and objectives.
• Works with Associate Dean for Academic Programs team to develop schedule of course developments and redevelopments and other Instructional design projects, including faculty training and development.
• Serves as an advanced level resource in providing consultations to faculty in the application of instructional design and the use of instructional technology.
• Co-leads instructional technology design meetings and facilitates ongoing communication with all CON division leadership and technology members.
• Evaluates and recommends for purchase the hardware, software, and peripheral needs for the academic program services and supports.

Course Quality Assurance

• Establish course quality guidelines, conduct regular evaluations of courses, develop and implement plan of correction when standards are not met.
• Oversee continuous quality improvement efforts based on learning analytics and other data sources.
• Identify trends and propose strategic improvements to enhance the student learning experience.
• Ensure all learning materials and course designs meet accessibility standards and promote inclusive practices.
• Foster a culture of equity and inclusion in educational design and technology use.

Faculty Development

• Develop and implement faculty development programs focused on integrating technology into teaching, enhancing digital pedagogy, and adopting best practices in various course modalities (Classroom, Online, Hybrid learning).
• Champion the adoption of new educational technologies and research-based instructional practices (e.g., AI, cognitive science findings).
• Drive innovation in curricular design and delivery, leveraging data analytics to inform decision-making and continuous improvement.

Scholarly Activities (20%)

• Engage in research and scholarly activities that contribute to the field (Nursing/Health professions) and educational innovation.
• Publish findings, present at conferences, and actively participate in academic communities.

Teaching (20%)

• Engage in teaching Health professions course
• Engage in teaching nursing

Professional Service (10%)

• Lead strategic communications with internal and external stakeholders regarding curriculum development projects, educational technology adoption, and faculty development initiatives.
• Actively lead or participate in institutional committees and task forces, providing expert guidance on educational technology and instruction.
• Participate in state, regional, or national professional organizations to serve and/or lead committees, task forces, etc.
