The goal for office assignments is to maximize the quality of work life and the function of teams.
Principles
- Space utilization is governed by the general principle of maximizing the quality of work life for faculty and staff while also maximizing the function of teams and programs.
- Faculty and staff are assigned only one office in the CON.
- Private offices are assigned to those who are full time or nearly full time. Although exceptions can made based on individual work needs, faculty and staff who are less than half time typically will be assigned a shared space.
- Graduate Assistants are assigned to shared space. Exceptions can be considered in the case of substantial needs for privacy, such as student counseling or research subject contacts.
- Function (e.g., team; programs) is prioritized over department membership in creating work groups and neighborhoods. To the degree possible, staff offices are close to faculty with whom they work.
- Larger offices are for faculty according to these general criteria:
- Full time
- 12 month appointment over 9 month appointment
- Seniority in rank/title
- Productivity (e.g., funded grants/contracts)
- When available, offices and project rooms can be assigned as “satellite” work areas. For example, a small private office might be left empty so that nearby faculty and staff may use it for temporary needs such as interviewing applicants, meeting with students, etc. Larger project rooms may be assigned as “teaming rooms” to faculty curriculum teams or other task forces or work groups.
- While the dean’s staff makes office assignments, consultation is sought from the relevant department chair or associate/assistant deans for best decision making. The same is true on all divisions, where the campus dean (and designee) is responsible for making office assignments, and relevant others are consulted. Again, the goal is to maximize the quality of work life and the function of teams.
