|
Purpose
Establishes criteria for appointment as graduate faculty associate for the College of Nursing (CON) as described in the University of Nebraska Graduate College Bylaws and Policies.
Scope
Applies to all faculty, volunteer faculty, and adjunct faculty.
Policy
Graduate faculty associate status is primarily designed to provide an opportunity for faculty to contribute towards the education of graduate students in their discipline, while they simultaneously develop the credentials to become eligible for graduate faculty status. In addition, graduate faculty associate status is appropriate for faculty whose professional background or assigned instructional responsibilities are such that their contribution towards graduate education is highly valued, but they are otherwise not likely to seek or be eligible for graduate faculty status.
A faculty member nominated as a graduate faculty associate must meet these criteria:
- hold the rank of assistant professor, clinical assistant professor, or corresponding adjunct faculty rank or above
- hold the terminal degree normally accepted for academic employment in the discipline
Graduate Faculty Associate Application
The process for applying to become a graduate faculty associate through the CON is listed below. Application packets must be submitted to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs (ADAP) and include:
- The UNMC Nomination for Graduate Faculty Associate Status Form.
- Curriculum Vita
- A Nomination Letter to include:
- For internal candidates:
- Evidence of Scholarly activity as defined using Boyer’s Model (1996) and includes: dissemination of scholarly work through DigitalCommons and/or invited and peer-reviewed presentations, evidence of leading QI/EBP projects, participation in national guidelines, leading changes at the state or national level, and primary or co-investigator on a grant award, etc.
- A detailed development plan to become eligible for graduate faculty status. The plan will be developed with the assistance of the ADAP and/or division assistant dean and must include the following:
- a timeframe
- how the plan enhances criteria for graduate faculty status
- an approved mentor with current graduate faculty status
- For external candidates with highly valued contributions to education (i.e. voting member on a dissertation committee), the letter must include the following:
- a timeframe
- planned contributions to education
- For internal candidates:
- All graduate faculty members in the College must vote on the application and at least 2/3 of the CON graduate faculty must vote to support the application. The ADAP will write a letter to the Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC explaining the reasons for supporting the nomination. The nomination materials will be sent to the Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC with the nomination letter.
- The Dean for Graduate Studies at UNMC will review the nomination and will appoint the faculty member to graduate faculty associate status, if appropriate.
- Graduate faculty associate appointments may be renewed for additional terms of four years each after completing the same process described above. For renewal, the new nomination letter will include an update on the previous development plan and how the faculty did/did not meet the goals of the previous plan.
- Procedures for appeal are in the University of Nebraska Graduate College Bylaws and Policies.
