Purpose

Establishes the criteria for the use of clinically related lab supplies and equipment. Provides definitions of consumable supplies and equipment.

Scope

This policy applies to all faculty, staff and students involved in skills labs and simulation.

Policy

The UNMC College of Nursing (CON) purchases consumable supplies for use by students in the learning environment, both in skills labs and simulation, under close supervision of faculty and/or teaching assistants. Task trainers (e.g. pelvis models for urinary catheterization) and equipment such as injection pads and simulation manikins provide a safe mechanism for practicing invasive skills. Safe performance of invasive skills, when completed following established guidelines, can be attained in this environment without risk of harm to patients.


  1. Consumable supplies and equipment available in the CON for student practice and demonstration of invasive clinical skills are to be used in designated area(s) on each campus.
  2. CON provided consumable supplies and equipment available to students are not to be used for practice of invasive procedures on students, faculty or other individuals.
  3. CON provided consumable supplies are to be disposed of properly in designated locations on each campus.
  4. Consumable supplies and equipment are not to be removed from designated areas without permission from staff and/or faculty.
  5. CON provided consumable supplies and equipment may be checked out on each campus following appropriate procedures for a planned patient encounter, such as blood glucose determination and/or blood pressure measurement, related to a nursing course under the supervision of faculty and/or teaching assistants.
  6. Equipment may also be checked out on each campus following appropriate procedures for practice off-campus of non-invasive procedures, such as blood pressure measurement.
  7. Real medication is not to be used as a consumable supply.

Definitions

  1. Consumable supplies are disposable, one-use devices, such as syringes, needles, glucose test strips, nasogastric tubes and urinary catheters.
  2. Equipment is a durable, non-disposable device such as injection pad, blood glucose meter, sphygmomanometer, intravenous infusion pump, scale and feeding pump.
  3. Invasive procedures/skills are such things as subcutaneous or intramuscular injections, intravenous needle insertions, nasogastric tube insertions, urinary catheter insertions.
  4. Non-invasive procedures are such things as blood pressure measurement and assessment of lung sounds, bowel sounds, neurological status, eyes and ears.
