Procedure

This is the College of Nursing (CON) procedure for a faculty member to resolve or report a faculty complaint or grievance against another CON faculty member.

  1. As part of professional practice, it is recommended that the first course of action involves a discussion between the faculty members to resolve the concern. All participants reserve the right to record any meeting that discusses these topics or have a third-party present to take notes regarding the meeting, with all parties having given consent and are aware of the recording. This meeting should occur within ten university days of the incident. If resolved, no further action is required.
  2. If the issue is not resolved, then the faculty member submits a written complaint via the form to their supervisor. This written complaint must be received within ten university days after the discussion with the involved faculty member(s).
  3. The supervisor reviews the complaint and meets with the faculty member within ten university days after receiving the written complaint. The meeting will be documented using the CON Faculty Formal Complaint and Grievance Supervisor form. If the issue is resolved, the faculty and supervisor forms will be sent to the dean’s office for documentation of resolution.
  4. If the issue is not resolved, the supervisor refers the matter to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs (ADAP) within ten university days. If the faculty member’s supervisor is the ADAP, the faculty member will move to the next step in the process The ADAP reviews both the faculty and supervisor complaint/grievance forms and meets with the faculty member within ten university days after receiving the written complaint. The meeting will be documented using the CON Faculty Formal Complaint and Grievance ADAP form. If the issue is resolved, the faculty, supervisor, and ADAP forms will be sent to the dean’s office for documentation of resolution.
  5. If the issue is not resolved, the situation is referred to the dean by the ADAP within ten university days after the ADAP meeting. The dean reviews the complaint forms (faculty, supervisor, and ADAP) and meets with the faculty member within ten university days after receiving the written complaint. The meeting will be documented using the CON Faculty Formal Complaint and Grievance Dean form. All forms will be kept in the dean’s office for documentation.
  6. If the issue is not resolved, the faculty may follow the UNMC complaint process as described in the UNMC Academic Affairs Faculty Conflict Resolution, Grievance, and Reporting Resources.
