General Position Description:
The Assistant Deans of the Omaha, Lincoln, West Nebraska, Kearney and Northern Divisions are appointed by the Dean and responsible to the Dean for leadership in meeting the goals of their respective division and assuring congruence with the mission and goals of the College. They have responsibility for oversight of administrative and academic matters. General areas of responsibility include the recruitment, mentorship, evaluation, and career development of faculty; the quality and staffing of courses; recruitment of students; obtaining and managing resources and information; and making timely reports as needed for the College Annual Report, accreditation reports, or as requested by the Dean. Division Assistant Deans have responsibility for working collaboratively with the Associate Deans and Academic Program Directors to accomplish Division, program and College goals. Division Assistant Deans are responsible for community relations and for representing the Dean in the local area. As members of the faculty, Division Assistant Deans also participate in the tripartite faculty role of teaching, research, and service.
The Division Assistant Deans collaborate with other administrators to ensure the quality of courses taught at the Division. They assure adherence to all policies related to curricular planning, implementation, and evaluation and student admission, retention, progression, and graduation. They schedule courses at the respective Division in collaboration with the Academic Program Directors and the Director of Administration and Operations as needed, and they work collaboratively with relevant others in implementing program delivery via distance learning technologies.
The Division Assistant Deans encourage and facilitate faculty career development and scholarly activity. They mentor faculty in their teaching, scholarship, and service activities. They work with the Associate Dean for Research to facilitate doctorally-prepared faculty’s research programs, and they encourage faculty’s scholarly productivity in the teaching and clinical practice missions as well. They are responsible for making the undergraduate teaching assignments of faculty and for considering equity in faculty's total workload. They collaborate with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and appropriate Academic Program Directors in making assignments to graduate courses. They recruit faculty to the Division, recommend the appointment of new faculty to the Dean, and orient new faculty. The Division Assistant Deans annually evaluate faculty performance, holding faculty accountable for their responsibilities to their tripartite roles. They counsel faculty toward promotion and tenure, and make recommendations to the Dean for merit salary increases. They approve faculty travel for educational and presentation opportunities within budget and make recommendations to the Dean for faculty educational leave, sabbatical leave, and nominations for faculty awards and scholarships. In consultation with faculty and the Morehead Center for Nursing Practice, they facilitate contractual agreements for faculty practice, ensuring that practice arrangements are aligned with the mission and needs of the College and are budget-neutral.
Division Assistant Deans make recommendations to the Dean regarding personnel needs. They recruit, hire, supervise, develop and evaluate staff, managing workflow and ensuring collaboration across functional units such as Learning Resource Centers, Student Services and technology.
Division Assistant Deans, in consultation with faculty, generally oversee the academic performance and welfare of students and they collaborate with the appropriate Standing Committees, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and appropriate Academic Program Director regarding matters of admission, retention, progression and graduation. They work closely with the Student Services Advisor and maintain open communication and support in regard to recruitment, inter-institutional coordination and advisement of students.
Division Assistant Deans act as liaisons with the local and university community and are ambassadors of UNMC, the Division, and the College. They encourage alumni relations, and maintain communication, participation, and public relations with organizations and others in the community, promoting development and fund-raising efforts.
Resources and Information:
Division Assistant Deans propose an annual budget and manage the budget of the Division in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Administration, judiciously utilizing resources for the good of the Division and the College and creating an environment of financial stewardship among faculty and staff. They are responsible for the oversight of the building facility and assignment of classrooms, assuring adequate and appropriately maintained space. They lend general oversight with the faculty, the appropriate academic Program Director, community agencies, and if needed the Associate Dean for Academic Programs in identifying appropriate clinical sites to meet educational standards and objectives, in making the most judicious use of these sites, and in maintaining current clinical agency contracts and good public relations. They have administrative responsibility for the staffing and functioning of the Learning Resource Center and for faculty use of other learning technologies. Division Deans prepare reports as requested.
Division Assistant Deans must have a graduate degree with a major in nursing. An earned doctorate is expected, although exceptions will be considered relative to qualifications. In addition, they should have experience and demonstrate skill in administration, interpersonal relations, teaching and curriculum development, and have demonstrated scholarly activity. Division Assistant Deans must be registered to practice nursing in Nebraska and demonstrate professional leadership activity in professional organizations. Terms of employment are in keeping with current University of Nebraska policy.
