This responsibility is an opportunity for professional growth and development of leadership skills, and should be rotated among faculty with previous experience teaching in the courses within that semester. The semester coordinator reports to the BSN Program Director, the Assistant Deans or Department Chairperson on the respective campuses and other administrators as needed.
General areas of responsibility include coordination of semester curricula implementation and instructional methods, communication, evaluation, and resource identification.
Curriculum and Instruction:
S/he is responsible to work closely with course coordinators as needed to provide smooth implementation of the courses within the semester. Toward that end, activities may include providing for the students a list of all faculty assigned to the semester with contact information, preparation of a schedule of examinations and major assignments across the semester. The Semester I coordinator may be involved in development of curricular orientation materials for incoming BSN students. S/he serves as a resource to course faculty in preparation of teaching materials, examination items and methods, and teaching strategies. S/he works with the course coordinator to assure a coordinated student schedule and efficient utilization of resources (classrooms, lab, clinical sites, etc.). S/he collaborates with the other campus semester coordinators to ensure continuity, sequencing, and integration across the curriculum.
Communication:
The semester coordinator meets regularly and/or as needed to coordinate curriculum implementation with course coordinators within the semester, and with the semester coordinators within the campus. S/he provides information regarding the curricular, teaching, and student issues to the BSN Program Director, Assistant Deans, Department Chairperson and other administrators as needed. S/he facilitates information exchanges and the development of a positive working environment among faculty teaching in that semester. S/he coordinates planning meetings for the semester teaching team as needed. S/he mentors new team members and/or graduate assistants as needed.
Evaluation:
The semester coordinator works with course coordinators to ensure that examinations are reliable and valid, and serves as a resource in planning remediation for individual students, as needed. The semester coordinator reviews the student’s academic or clinical performance as requested by the course coordinator, team member and/or student. The semester coordinator may provide counseling to students as requested by the course coordinator, team member and/or student. After collaborating with the course coordinator, the semester coordinator may refer students to other available and appropriate resources for counseling. The coordinator works in collaboration with the Assistant Dean or Department Chairperson, Student Services Coordinator and the BSN Program Director. S/he is available to meet with students who have overall semester curricular concerns, and refers them to appropriate administrators as necessary. In collaboration with the course coordinator, s/he ensures that agency clinical evaluations are completed and submitted to the BSN Program Director’s staff assistant within the time-frame provided.
Resources:
The semester coordinator works with course coordinators to identify necessary faculty and material resources needed to effectively implement the curriculum, and notifies appropriate administrators.
