General Position Description
While maintaining the integrity of the concept-based curriculum and ensuring inclusion of active learning strategies, the undergraduate course coordinator is primarily responsible for planning and facilitating implementation of the curriculum relative to the course assigned. The course coordinator communicates with the undergraduate semester coordinator, undergraduate faculty team members, students, administration and agency personnel as appropriate to facilitate the effective implementation of the course. This responsibility is an opportunity for professional growth and development of leadership skills, and should be rotated among faculty who have had previous experience teaching in the course. In addition to responsibilities to the course, the course coordinator may be asked to provide input into team members’ ongoing development and course success. The undergraduate course coordinator reports to the assistant dean and other administrators as needed.
General areas of responsibility include coordination of course curriculum implementation and instructional methods, communication, evaluation of the course and resource identification.
Curriculum and Instruction
S/he carries primary accountability for facilitating implementation of the course on a day-to-day basis, reviews course materials, and ensures that essential deadlines are met. S/he is responsible for syllabi development and updates for the course. S/he works with the undergraduate semester coordinator to assure a coordinated student schedule and efficient use of resources (classrooms, lab, clinical sites, etc.) S/he works with the undergraduate team members to coordinate specific teaching responsibilities and other activities within the course in an equitable manner based on the expertise and interest of individual faculty. Preparation and maintenance of the course Blackboard is the responsibility of the course coordinator. The course coordinator is responsible for preparing the campus specific addendum and posting it to the appropriate course Blackboard site. The undergraduate course coordinator is responsible for submitting mid-term and final grades for each student.
The coordinator serves as stimulus for course development and revisions. For clinical courses, s/he works with the faculty team members, the assistant deans to select clinical experiences and plans clinical schedules for students. The course coordinator ensures that in clinical courses, all completed clinical evaluations of students are collected and filed at the end of the semester. S/he collaborates with the semester coordinator and the coordinators from other courses in the semester to ensure continuity, sequencing, and integration of the curriculum. In conjunction with faculty, s/he prepares a summary evaluation of the course which identifies accomplishments and recommendations for changes and submits the report to the assistant dean and undergraduate program director.
Communication:
The undergraduate course coordinator establishes communication channels within the faculty team to facilitate information exchanges and the development of a positive working environment within the course. S/he provides information regarding the curriculum, teaching and student issues to the semester coordinator. S/he assists in planning, presenting and evaluating the orientation activities for new faculty or graduate assistants in relation to the course or clinical area. S/he attends planning meetings for the semester teaching team. S/he communicates student’s progress in the course to the appropriate administrators, student services coordinator, the assistant dean and the undergraduate program director. S/he mentors new team members and/or graduate assistants as needed.
Evaluation:
The course coordinator works with the team members to ensure that examinations are reliable and valid, and serves as a resource in planning academic remediation for individual students as needed. For clinical courses, the coordinator is available to faculty to assist in evaluating the student’s clinical performance and developing plans for improvement if warranted. The course coordinator, in collaboration with the semester coordinator, reviews the student’s academic or clinical performance as requested by the student and/or faculty. The coordinator may provide counseling to students as requested by students and/or faculty. S/he may refer students to other available and appropriate resources for counseling. S/he works in collaboration with the student services coordinator, the assistant dean and the undergraduate program director. The undergraduate course coordinator, along with the semester coordinator, ensures that agency clinical evaluations are completed and submitted to the Director of the Undergraduate Program’s staff assistant within the time-frame provided.
Resources:
The undergraduate course coordinator works with the undergraduate semester coordinator to identify necessary faculty and material resources to effectively implement the course curriculum, and notifies appropriate administrators. The course coordinator works with the appropriate personnel at each division or in Academic Programs to arrange for contracts and agreements with affiliating agencies.
