Purpose
This policy provides guidelines for all College of Nursing divisions regarding on-campus and off-campus activities and arranging make-up during inclement weather.
Scope
This policy applies to all five divisions of the College of Nursing and courses delivered across campuses.
Policy
UNMC CON Division Operations During Inclement Weather
- UNMC CON Omaha Division remains operational regardless of weather conditions. UNMC CON Omaha Division follows the UNMC Inclement Weather Policy for official closures.
- UNMC CON Lincoln Division will comply with their respective chancellors’ decisions regarding weather-related closures of their building.
- UNMC CON Kearney Division will comply with their respective chancellors’ decisions regarding weather-related closures of their building.
- UNMC CON Norfolk Division will comply with community college leadership’s decisions regarding weather-related closures of their building.
- UNMC CON Scottsbluff Division will comply with community college leadership’s decisions regarding weather-related closures of their building.
On-campus & Off-campus Cancellation Procedures
- Full-Day Closure of CON Buildings (UNK, UNL, WNCC, Northeast) & Activities Due to Weather
- All on-campus, in-person activities will be canceled.
- When possible, scheduled class activities will transition to online via Zoom.
- A recording will be made available for later viewing.
- Late Start Closure of CON Buildings (UNK, UNL, WNCC, Northeast) & Activities Due to Weather
- All on-campus, in-person activities will be canceled until the building opens.
- When possible, class activities scheduled to begin prior to the building opening will transition online via Zoom.
- Consecutive activities will be assessed individually based on:
- Start time relative to the building’s scheduled re-opening.
- Student, faculty, and staff travel logistics regarding timing of consecutive activities.
- Off-Campus Activities during Closure or Late Start of CON Buildings (UNK, UNL, WNCC, Northeast)
- CON building closures do not cancel off-campus activities. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis by the faculty in collaboration with the division assistant dean.
- Safety of all students and faculty is the priority
- College of Nursing class and clinical activities canceled due to weather must be rescheduled.
Decision Making in Absence of Official Cancellation
If there is no official cancellation, but safety is a concern, individual faculty members/campus representatives must:
- Consult their division assistant dean for guidance before cancelling activities.
- Prioritize student and faculty safety when deciding on cancellations.
- In instances of Preceptor/CSI-supervised off-campus experiences: faculty must coordinate with their students and the assigned nurse to determine next steps.
In the event of Off-campus activity cancellations:

- Faculty/campus representative are responsible for:
- Notifying students of cancellation via online learning platform.
- Informing the clinical site if applicable.
- Arranging make-up sessions for the canceled activities.
- Ensure that the Division Assistant Dean is informed of all cancellations and make-up plans.
Courses Delivered Across Campuses
If a course is delivered via zoom simultaneously to multiple campus buildings, the following guidelines apply:
- If the campus of origin building is closed due to weather, the class will transition to remote Zoom if possible.
- A recording will be made available for later viewing.
- If the campus of origin building remains open, but other campuses close, class will continue via zoom as scheduled allowing students from the closed campus to join remotely.
